A 42-in wide bookcase built low and horizontal, so the top doubles as a surface instead of climbing a wall. Six open cubes run along the span in two widths, with narrower 12-in openings for paperbacks and wider 14.5-in bays for binders, records, or fabric bins. Metal rails down the sides of each cube catch items before they slide out the open ends. The wood top carries up to 88 lbs, enough for a television or a turntable, and each cube holds 44 lbs. A heavy-gauge frame with 4 in of ground clearance lets a vacuum pass underneath.
